    Conratulations lucydo52!
Number 34 was the random number assigned to you and it came up first! If you could send me a PM with your full name and address I'll send the On The Buses box set out to you soon. :)

Would have liked to have given out prizes to everyone again and a few entries deserve a runners up prize but I've had to limit it to a second and third place for the best entries as I'm still skint after the last competition!

In second place well done to Jenny. You've won an individual series of On The Buses. Just choose any of the series from 1 to 7 (see the list here)and send me a PM with your full name and address and I'll order it for you.

In third place congratulations to robtallica. You've won a £4.99 DVD from the HMV sale so just let me know what you'd like and I'll order it.

Only Fools & Horses just sneaked the most mentions to take the comedy crown from the almighty Fawlty Towers.

Thanks to all who entered, come back later today to see what the new weekly prize is and hope you get lucky next time!

    Grant :D

For me the funniest ever series is Fawlty Towers.

An incredibly low amount of just 12 episodes were produced - the original 6 in '75 and the 2nd series in 1979 (there are many rumours of a lost episode) . It's impact since though has been immense . It basically revolved around the everyday running of a Torquay hotel , the owners Basil and Cybil Fawlty , the attractive maid Polly , the broken English speaking Spanish bellboy Manuel and the many interesting guest of Fawlty Towers.

I just can't look away from the awesome John Cleese in full flight , whether he's avoiding his overbearing wife Cybil(Prunella Scales) , trying to use the sweet and kind Polly(Connie Booth - Cleese's then current wife) , abusing the man who can do no right Manuel(Andrew Sachs) and even abusing his own 'guests'.

Cleese kills me with his inimitable brand of great comic timing , 2 faced snobbery , xenophobia , lunacy , paranoia and loathing of his respective upper and lower classes . He likes to think of himself as Upper - he's far nearer lower class , this in particular grates with him. When he loses it big time and he's backed into a corner the outcome will have hilarious results .

The premise of the average episode is that Basil has to keep a secret from his wife Cybil or a guest(s) , that secret involves usually some manner of accident , incident or poor behaviour on Basil's part (i.e. a winning gamble on a horse or stalking a rule breaking guest).Generally Basil has the rug pulled out from under his feet just when he thought it was safe to relax.

The roller-coaster 30 minute episodes feel like an hour long due to the length of the scenes and the amount of well executed gags within . There's no wasted time for filler content - the gags and plot lines come thick and fast at the viewer - to such as extent that you feel almost worn out after watching 1 episode.I can safely say that there is as much content in 1 episode of Fawlty Towers as there is in an entire season of the likes of The BBC's incredibly mediocre 'My Family'.

Pound for pound Fawlty Towers must be the funniest sit com ever produced ,the characters are set in stone , everyone can relate to almost any situation that occurs in any given episode - pure tv gold and time has not diminished it one jot.

There's lots of favourites I could mention but my current one is Still Game.

The series follows Jack & Victor, two scottish pensioners who get up to all sorts of antics and find them in hilarious situations. It was originally part of Chewin' the Fat but became it's own series and now is it its' 6th series.

I think that this is hilarious, and very underrated

robtallica - good argument for the legendary sitcom, agreed that nothing's wasted and you wouldn't change anything. Timeless stuff.

samf1971 - welcome to the forum - favourite episode for me was Victor determined to give Jack the best birthday ever, tragically funny.

sebfrogs - thanks for joining ze forum you, I won't try and speak allo allo language I'll just end up sounding like ali g.

secksy34 - Welcome to the forum. Would much rather watch baldrick on blackadder than on a time team dig any day.

Hi De Hi Series 1 & 2 DVD

It's 'Hi-de-Hi' for me. I know many people find this a little corny but there was one scene that just made me fall off my chair laughing..I don't even know why, it just did. It's the episode 'Day of Reckoning' (in the above box set) where a pantomime horse is seen riding a real horse. I still smile, all these years later, just thinking about it.

This scene alone makes it a classic for me.:face-grin:

    Hi Grant,

My favourite TV Series is of course ON THE BUSES :face-wink: :face-wink: :face-wink:

(Hey love the new smiley face icons!)

No not really - I do love On the Buses - but my all time favourite is STEPTOE AND SON - I could watch this again and again. It has a fantastic blend of comedy and sadness. Unlike many other comedy shoes of the 60s and 70s this one is not at all dated and is as fresh today as it was back then. Incredibly enough the later episodes are just as funny as the earlier episodes. I think the success of this programme is down to the inspired casting of the unique talents of Wilfred Brambell and Harry H Corbett. People will still be laughing at their exploits in 50 years time. Can the same be said of the comedys today? I have built up a nice little collection of them and just need one more to complete the set

    Hello Everyone!

Thanks for running such a great comptition and what a fantastic prize. I really enjoy all the old sitcoms. Some have already been listed, notably Fawlty Towers, Steptoe and Son, On the Buses, Allo Allo, Only Fools and Horses and The Royle Family. But there is one that should surely not be forgotten and that is Dad's Army. 80 episodes of this classis series were made and the cast remained unchanged throughout. Incredibly some of the cast were in their eighties during the last series! It is continually funny, charming and at times hilarious.

If you have never seen it (what planet are you from?) Buy a DVD now and I guarantee you will be hooked.

For all time comedy classics it has to be Fawlty Towers

    http://www.dvdcollections.co.uk/search/fetchPrices.php?id=mfno1013481

so few of them were made and yet nearly everybody who has seen them has watched them again and again and again. Cleese is naturally funny in almost everything he does, a definite throwback to the days of python and the great films that came out of that, with his bumbling sidekick Manuel, played by Andrew Sachs (who I cant believe is the same guy who does voice overs for the programmes like airline etc)anyway, with classics like the unforgettable 'dont mention the war' sketch and the 'Dead body in the basket' its amazing how much energy Cleese injects into the character and its almost non stop you can see it coming but you know its gonna be a disaster comedy. To me a true classic of comedy genius

Ok, I'll be the girly one and say Friends!! I really had to think about this one, I used to love Allo Allo and Brittas (forgot that one), but was probably too young to appreciate some of the risque comments as a child! I picked up Friends a few series in but have probably seen them all by now - something I could relate to on sharing accomodation at the time and always somthing new. Joey was a star (though sadly not in his own sitcom!) Sadly have to say if I was like any of them I would probably be a combination of all three girls!

For me it just has to be Dad's Army. In terms of standing the test of time I needed to look no further than my two young sons aged 5 and 7 laughing at the antic's of Mainwaring and Pike!! Excellent stuff. The writing is top class and the acting is very personable. You can relate to the actors and the characters they were playing. In fact all the cast were friends and met outside work very often on Arthur Lowes boat.

Dad's Army has returned to the stage with Leslie Grantham (aka Dirty Den from Eastenders) as the spiv Private Walker currently being held at a number of theatres up and down the country. Use the following link to view a massive piece of television comedy history. Well worth the money.

I much prefer the old situation comedies. I couldn't decide which one is my favourite, so I chose my top ten :face-smile:

My Top Ten in no particular order are:

    Are You Being Served?

    Porridge

    Only Fools and Horses

    Please Sir

    The Good Life

    Steptoe and Son

    On the Buses

    George and Mildred

    Sorry

    Till Death us do Part

If I was pushed to chose a favourite, I would have to say On the Buses (I know! I know!) ! Every episode was like a 30 minute Carry On Film with Blakey (I'll get you, Butler!), Stan, Jack, Arthur, Mum and Olive.

The situations normally involved Stan losing his trousers and having to drive the bus back to the Depot, while avoiding Blakey's eagle eyes, then after getting a chit ( I said CHIT!) from Blakey for his new suit , he's off to the canteen and chatting up a sexy young clippie dollybird. "Oooooh, You do look smart in your new uniform, Stan!" (whatever did they see in Stan and Jack?), then he's off home to find Mum, who would have burnt Stan's supper, while Arthur would be avoiding Olive's amorous attentions. Stan, eager to meet up with the new clippie would end up sitting on a newly painted chair, ruining his new uniform and much hilarity would ensue. They sure don't write comedies like that anymore. Classic!

My funniest film is: planes, trains & automobiles.

There are so many funny moments throughout this film, which stars 2 of the best comic actors Steve Martin and John Candy (RIP).

The sharing the motel bed, and waking up to ask where is hand is, thinking it is between 2 pillows lol.
Driving along the road, "but going the wrong way" is hilarious.
And a third bit, is when Steve Martin gets picked up by his testicles... OUCH !!!!:face-devil:

Have to agree with Wingeast. "Divided we Stand" is my favourite Steptoe also. Its the one where they want to lead seperate lives, but live in the same house, so they partition off all the rooms, half the room each. My favourite bit has Harold and Albert watching half a TV each, after watching football ("Was that a goal?") - they switch over to the ballet:

Albert (reading TV Listing) "Royal Festival Hall. Margot Fonteyn and Rudolph Nureyev. Les Sylphides - dirty devils..."

Harold (enjoying the ballet) "I hope they don't dance too far apart."

Albert (calling over the wall) "Harold, you should see what's happened on this side, her drawers have just fallen down.... :face-grin: :face-grin: :face-grin:

I love quite a few of the older sitcoms (although I'm not old enough to remember some of them) including On the Buses, Hi De Hi, Rising Damp

I also love Little Britain, Phoenix Nights and Fawlty Towers

Porridge is the funniest for me - Ronnie Barker gives a perfect performance. All the characters and actors are excellent too. Very difficult to choose though, Fawlty Towers and Cheers are right there too.

It may not really qualify but You've Been Framed is almost guaranteed to give you many laughs each show - because it has been going so long it is easy to overlook it in the TV schedule, but it is probably better now than it has ever been, due to the wider range of material to choose from, plus the aid of Harry Hill's comments.

Not out yet on DVD (but will appear eventually hopefully), The Wonder Years was a superb American series (1988-93) which may not be known to all. Great writing and acting, and although the setting is a typical American suburban family, anyone could identify with it as it will bring back many memories of growing up as a teenager. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Wonder_Years

I could have guessed most of these answers (though that doesn't make them ineligible for the prize) - but any series for whose fans negotiate and release their own dvd deserves to climb high in your list. Joking Apart is the unlikely title of a BBC2 comedy series by Steven Moffat, who recently made the long journey to Hollywood via a few of the best episodes of Doctor Who. Robert Bathurst - long before Cold Feet - and Fiona Gillies - long before Holby City - are a comedian and his soon-to-be-ex-wife battling their way through a marriage breakdown. Doesn't sound like the stuff of comedy, does it? Well try this and be very, very amused:

The Worst Week Of My Life

Hi Guys, I am a Newbie to the forum. It seems very friendly.

My favorite tv series is The Worst week of my life. I think they only made 2 series. I hope they make a 3rd or at least a christmas special. I really love it because you are on the edge of your chair thinking that things can't get any worst for him, but of course they do, they get much worst, but really funny. I enjoyed reading the other suggestions above and will definately look out for some of the ones that I didn't know about. Ciao for now, Jade :face-kiss:

Fawlty Towers gets my vote. So many unforgettable moments that still make me laugh out loud whenever I see them - even my kids laugh at John Cleese strutting around in his inimitable way.

Has to be the Benny Hill Show.

Absoltely brilliant sketches, which are timeless. A lot of them have no dialogue, so could be watched anywhere in the world. And then of course the famous chases, with that famous music.

Haven't been around so much this weekend but great to see so many entries and find out what keeps everyone laughing. Who'dve thought when On The Buses first aired in 1872 that it could still drum up so much interest today :face-grin:

weller96c, quite a list - sorry you lost it first time around. Had a look and I can't find a way of changing the timeout settings here so probably best to select all and copy what you've written before submitting just to be safe.

Thanks all who posted links to the dvds, found some decent deals among them too. Anyone who's not posted a link I'll make sure and add one for so you'll still be entered but in next weeks competition it's over to you.

Still time to enter up till midnight tonight after which I'll be performing the random draw in a sealed off warehouse with lawyers and government officials present to avoid any results rigging :face-monkey:

The winner (and any runners up) will be announced on the forum tomorrow morning and I'll send an email out if you won too.

    Good luck!

    Grant

:face-laugh:After much consideration I've come up with what i think is the most funniest film of all time .
The most funniest film(s) has to be The Pink Panther collection. A succesful franchise with many sequels that kept the 1970's decade roaring with laughter. Peter Sellers' role as Inspector Clouseau is more than extraordinary and around every corner there is always something to make you:face-laugh:
I have got to say few have managed to keep the audience crying with joy with over 6 films or 10 hours, the way Peter Sellers has! Hugely satisfying, these movies can calm even Incredible Hulk!
What is interesting about the films is that there is a mixture of mystery, thriller, and slapstick humour all blended in hilariously to create something completely out of this world. I can never stop watching the films and each time the laughter only increases.
It's a real shame that 'The Return of The Pink Panther' is not included in the Pink Panther box set, so you'll have to buy that separately. There are also two more sequels, 'The Curse of The Pink Panther' and 'The Son of The Pink Panther' but these do not feature Petter Sellers, thus lacking the infinite humour of the first 6 films!
Here is the link for the Pink Panther Collection- no DVD collection should be without it!!!:face-laugh:

    http://www.dvdcollections.co.uk/search/fetchPrices.php?id=mfno1067536

The set is worth every penny and the appearnce is very attractive. A purple boxset with a cut out mirror on the front right of the outer slipcase! The inside folds out awesomely with animated shots of each of the five films in the background all over double sided, revealing the discs in the front! The quality of the picture and sound is awesome and clear, with the outstanding interactive menus as a bonus. it comes complete with a sixth discs with various features to relive the outrageous moments over and over again. It also has documentaries, a couple of The Pink Panther Cartoon episodes, original uncut trailers! And of course, to complete the set, a collector's booklet which is a must read!

And here is the link for 'The Return of The pink Panther', not included in the collection above, but nevertheless in the same standard as the five in the collection!

    http://www.dvdcollections.co.uk/search/fetchPrices.php?id=mfno1037941

Believe it or not, all 6 Peter Sellers' pink Panther movies are the funniest. Each tops the other and you can never stop :face-laugh: laughing throughout each whole films!

Whether it is the traditional slipping, falling and tripping scenes :face-laugh:, or the outragrous slapstick violence between Clouseasu and Kato (he just killed me!) :face-laugh: or even the hilarious accent of Clouseasu such as 'phone' and 'feurn', I can clearly state 'in black and white' the Pink Panther movies will never go out of date and each will keep its audience laughing out of control :face-laugh: for genearations to come, since the many decades it has!!!

The Peter Sellers' Pink Panther film collection- the most outrageous comedy- mystery- thriller- classic franchise ever!- bar none!

    (phew)!:face-grin:
    :face-laugh: :face-laugh: :face-laugh:
