You'll now see a change on the site as the DVD.co.uk links are being changed to Base.com as they've just launched their rebranded site. I love when they change their names so I get to check that every page and button here to matches up
So Base.com follows Virgin Megastores changing to Zavvi... stay tuned for the rebranded DVD Collections at Zoombadoombaloolah.com
This is a strange decision. Surely, in the world of DVD retailing, the most valuable URL's in the world are DVD.com and DVD.co.uk. So why rebrand to base.com?
It just makes no sense!
By the way, Virgin didn't rebrand as Zavvi as such. They are a new company. The board of directors at Virgin Megastores did a management buy out to buy the company from Virgin, and hence the name changed to Zavvi. So they now have no affiliation with the Virgin group.
Thanks for the info on Virgin dvdbargainhunter, didn't know that's how it started.
Also share some of your questions about why DVD.co.uk would abandon the best DVD domain in the UK.
A couple of thoughts I had was that they're clearly expanding their site beyond just DVDs (ala Amazon, Play). Spreading their net wider to include more products with higher margins. So they didn't want their site associated primarily with DVDs. Can see their point but I reckon it's a strong enough name to stand up to being associated with more than just DVDs.
The other thought I had is that they're thinking longer term and worrying that DVDs might go the way of CDs with less being bought and more downloaded so they're jumping ship early and moving focus to be safe. If that's something to do with it I reckon they're way too premature as can't see DVDs being replaced by downloading for quite some time yet (if they ever will).
Funny company though as they also experimented with having a price comparison service on their pages which didn't really work out and would sometimes link to Amazon if they didn't have something in stock. Interesting to see how Base.com is doing in a few years time.
In the meantime here's hoping they'll accept my £50 offer to take their dvd.co.uk domain off their hands
And of course the new site doesnt display
correctly in my browser (no buttons bar).

You're a bit late Grant, I went behind your back and snapped it up already
update on the rebranding - I ordered some dvd's from blahdvd, a couple of the dvd's took a couple of weeks to arrive due to stock issues, when I opened the packet with a momentary loss of where I bought the dvd from, I pulled out a voucher for "£40 off your next order" on virgin wines, the voucher was from dvd.co.uk, then digging further into the packet I found the receipt from blahdvd.
so in short is base.com running 3 seperate site all virtually the same (blahdvd, dvd.co.uk, and base.com)
hi mne 1976 they are actually running 4 they also have 101cd.com
